The rocket exploded. Screams erupted throughout the square. Runners crashed into one another, sprinting from the Town Hall. Hunt and Nick stood apart, separated by the panic. A shoulder connected with Hunt’s, nearly spinning him around. He righted himself and smoothed the cool fabric of Maria’s shirt against his chest. He smiled at Nick, then charged into Santo Domingo’s alley.
Two runners collided into him, pushing him back. He shoved them aside, struggling to get through the swell surging up the narrow corridor. Gaps appeared as individuals dove against the walls, cowering in piles. Hunt bolted into the open space, increasing his pace.
